The Great Sand Confusion: Testing the Boundaries of Gravity

Every now and then a child surprises you by asking a question they don't yet have the words to ask.
This week, one of our toddlers spent almost twenty minutes investigating a party bag of sand. What started as simple curiosity quickly became a tiny science experiment. She wasn't trying to make a mess. She was trying to understand how the world worked...
We are currently exploring "Birthday Parties" as part of our theme, and I placed party gift bags around the sandpit. So NATURALLY, Elephant put a spade full of sand inside the bag to watch it fall. It made a lovely sound when she shook it which she found highly entertaining. Next, she turned the bag upside down to watch the sand fall back out, but what she didn't realize is that the bag had flaps at the top that trapped some of the sand. So when she turned the bag back around to peak inside, some of the sand still remained inside. This baffled her. She repeated this action for several minutes before sitting down to investigate what was going on. Why was all of the sand not leaving the bag? Eventually she carefully pulled the bag apart, determined to solve her mystery. Hidden inside were two folded flaps trapping the last of the sand. She burst into a huge grin, gave a delighted giggle, and happily returned to her game.
I purposefully told Amanda not to let her see us watching her, and not to intervene unless she asked for help. We had a quiet giggle about all the expressions during this "investigation".
What Was Really Happening?
To an adult, this looks like a child playing with sand.
To me, it looked like a scientist testing a theory.
Elephant has become fascinated by gravity over the past few weeks. We've quietly been placing little "gravity stations" around the playground - not as lessons, but as invitations. Balls rolling down ramps, Scooters rolling down hills, Feathers that float in the breeze. Objects that fall... and some that don't.
The party bag became another experiment.
She had already formed an expectation: turn the bag upside down and the sand should fall out.
When that expectation wasn't met, her brain didn't simply move on. It paused. It questioned. It tested. It observed. It changed variables. Eventually she discovered the hidden folds that trapped the sand and adjusted her understanding of how the bag worked.
Children don't need us to answer every question. Sometimes they simply need enough uninterrupted time to ask the question properly. Had we stepped in after thirty seconds and shown Elephant the folded corners, she would have learned about the bag. Instead, she learned something much bigger:
That the world makes sense.
That mysteries can be solved.
That persistence pays off.
And perhaps most importantly...
That she is capable of figuring things out for herself.
